Universidad ORT Uruguay

In late March 2026 a delegation from ISIA Firenze — four scholarship students, a PhD student and three teachers — spent a week in Montevideo as guests of Universidad ORT Uruguay. The connection was born at Le Murate in 2025, with Oscar Aguirre among the guests of MAP Firenze.

Take-off

At night, at the Madrid stopover: through the gate window, the white Iberia plane with its red and yellow tail attached to the jet bridge, before the flight to Montevideo.

From Florence, a stop in Madrid, then a night over the Atlantic to Montevideo. A week in Uruguay begins.

Punta Carretas

Four of us seen from behind under a bus shelter on a tree-lined street in Montevideo: backpacks, jeans, someone checking their phone.

Our base for the week: Punta Carretas, the neighbourhood between the lighthouse and the rambla.

Stop 03 · 26.03 · 30.03 · Rambla Wilson

The Rambla

A woman in a headscarf sits on the red granite wall of the rambla drinking mate, a thermos beside her, the Río de la Plata in front.

Montevideo’s seafront, miles along the Río de la Plata. Our first walk, in the afternoon, along the Rambla Wilson.

Ciudad Vieja

At the Torres García Museum: detail of a work painted on raw canvas, with the words Uptown Times, 42 St, World’s Center, East, West and Fifth Av among black and green shapes and a red star.
At the Mercado del Puerto: a hanging sign reading I ♥ UY, under the red signs of the parrillas.

A day in the old town: the Torres García Museum, Palacio Taranco, the Mercado del Puerto, MAPI (Museum of Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art) and, to finish, the Rambla Sur.

Plaza Independencia and Teatro Solís

Palacio Salvo, with its domed tower, rises above the rooftops and white buildings of Montevideo against a blue sky.

The heart of Montevideo: the square with the Artigas monument and the Puerta de la Ciudadela, and next to it the Teatro Solís, the city’s historic theatre.

Stop 07 · 30.03 · Rural del Prado, Montevideo

Semana Criolla del Prado

At the Rural del Prado for the Semana Criolla: the old stone gateway of the Bovinos pavilion with its arched green gate, behind it the white frame of a Ferris wheel and a blue sky.

The Semana Criolla at the Rural del Prado: gauchos, jineteadas (rodeo), music and food from the criollo tradition.

Punta del Este, Casapueblo and MACA

Casapueblo: on a white terrace overlooking the sea, large white ceramic vases with faces drawn in blue and a black and white animal, under a blue sky.
At MACA, towards sunset: a large dark sculpture cut with flame-like shapes above a pool that reflects it; a few people sitting on the wooden platform in the middle.

A trip along the east coast: Casapueblo, Carlos Páez Vilaró’s white house-museum on the cliffs of Punta Ballena, then Punta del Este and MACA, the Atchugarry Museum of Contemporary Art, among the hills of Manantiales.
